Understanding AL Amyloidosis

Dr. Maurer directs the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Laboratory for the Elderly (CCRLE) at the Allen Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Maurer is a member of the Advanced Cardiac Care Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. Dr. Sanchorawala is the Professor of Medicine and Director of the Amyloidosis Center of Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center. A pioneer in the field of clinical research in AL amyloidosis. Her work in the treatment of AL amyloidosis has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, which has resulted in the evolution of the standard of care for these patients. She is currently heading several clinical trials in the treatment of AL amyloidosis.

Dr. Raymond Comenzo received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in medicine at Boston City Hospital, followed by his fellowship in hematology/oncology at New England Medical Center. Dr. Comenzo is professor of medicine and pathology at Tufts University School of Medicine and director of the Blood Bank and Stem Cell Processing Laboratory.

Angela Dispenzieri, M.D., is a consultant in the Division of Hematology, Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic, and serves as Chair of Hematology Research. She has joint appointments in the Division of Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, and the Department of Molecular Medicine. Dr. Dispenzieri holds the academic rank of Professor of Medicine and of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and she is recognized with the distinction of a named professorship, the Serene M. and Frances C. Durling Professorship.

Dr. Dunnmon is the acting Medical Team Leader in the Division of Cardiology and Nephrology as part of the Office of New Drugs (OND), Office of Drug Evaluation I (ODEI), Division of Cardiovascular and Renal Products (DCRP) within the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), to serve as the CDER Public Private Partnership (PPP) Liaison to ARC.

Dr. Michelle Campbell is a reviewer on the Clinical Outcome Assessments (COA) Staff and Scientific Coordinator of the COA Qualification Program in the Office of New Drugs (OND), Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). COA Staff advises OND review divisions and other FDA centers by providing consultation and advice on clinical outcome assessment development, validation, and interpretation of clinical benefit endpoints in clinical trials to support drug development, labeling, and promotion. Additionally, the COA Staff leads and manages CDER’s Clinical Outcome Assessment qualification program and engages with internal and external stakeholders to advance good scientific clinical outcome measurement standards and policy development. Her prior research experience includes the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods to develop instruments, program evaluation and the application of various study designs including clinical trials. Dr. Campbell earned her BA in Biology from the College of Notre Dame, her MS in Health Science (concentration in Community Health Education) from Towson University and her PhD in Pharmaceutical Health Services Research from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

Nicole Gormley, MD, is the Acting Division Director for the Division of Hematologic Malignancies II at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Gormley joined the FDA in 2011 and previously served as a clinical reviewer and the Multiple Myeloma Clinical Team Lead. While in these roles, she has actively engaged with the multiple myeloma community on the development of novel endpoints, including minimal residual disease, and methods to address racial disparities. Dr. Gormley completed fellowship training in hematology and critical care at the National Institutes of Health and served as the Deputy Clinical Director at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute prior to joining the Food and Drug Administration.

Isabelle Lousada has been the driving force behind ARC, building successful collaborations and programs across the sectors to advance the science and understanding of the amyloidosis diseases. She was diagnosed with AL amyloidosis in 1996 and for the past twenty years she has been committed to empowering other patients while serving on several boards and committees, speaking at leadership meetings and key events to encourage research, increase access, and support the critical and unmet needs of amyloidosis patients. She currently serves as co-chair for the regulatory science working group at the EveryLife Foundation.
